Anyone ever heard of a carbide welder. I acquired one today that is very old. It is mounted on a cart with iron wheels

I got in a package deal with some other stuff. I dont have any pics yet (its too dark). It looks like a tank (about 15 or 20 gallons) with a lantern type device on top. All mounted on a cart with iron wheels. It has a place for a bottle of some kind it looks like

FYI - The reaction of calcium carbide with water was discovered 1862.
CaC2 + 2H2O → C2H2 + Ca(OH)2
This reaction is the basis of the industrial manufacture of acetylene, and is the major industrial use of calcium carbide.
Do you have any idea how old it is?

It doesn't sound like an acetylene generator, it IS an acetylene generator. When I was a boy (60 years ago) it was in wide use in shops that carried out oxyacetylene welding.

If You try to use that thing You have bigger balls than I have. Altho they can be operated safely, they can go BANG too.

Might be an acetylene generator, uses calciume carbide and water to make the gas. Same as a miners lamp.

Here are some pics of a 1924 portable model with a glass carbide receptacle (not sure that this would be a good idea, although you would know if you had enough carbide to finish the job!).

And here are some pics of modern versions.
