If you are to get an ASME1X qualification for downhand 5g posisition to weld up to 48inch diameter pipe what size would the test piece have to be, i understand that you have an upper and lower size restriction on the size of the test piece that you weld

If you do a welder qualification with a pipe 2-7/8" or larger your range of qualification is 2-7/8" minimum to unlimited dia.

Andrew,
There is no maximum diameter qualified for welder qualification, only minimum, the maximum is only governed by the WPS you are using.

Shane

The upper diameter may not be restricted, the the wall thickness is limited based on the wall thickness of the test piece.
