Hello all,
where would I find requirements for erection aides that are needed on a structure. what to do, how much, where yada yada. I have run across this a few times in the past as far as erectors saying that we have missed erection aides for both safety and picking, but I can't find anytrhing to guide us. The erectors have tried to help, but can't locate specifically where anything says....do this, do that or anything of the sort. It would be easy to do if I had direction from erectors, but I never here from them until steel is onsite. I am trying to alleviate something that always seems to come up whether minor or major.

use as directed, if erection lasts more than 4 hours call a doctor

side effects include heart attack, blindness, divorce

Hello Jeremiah, I can't be sure, but you might take a look at the AISC website, it seems to me that they do have some discussion or examples of the things that you are asking. If not, they might have a contact provision so that you can ask the question directly of them. Best regards, Allan

Allan, thanks. I did just that. I sent an inquiry regarding my question. while that is out I did a second review of the projects documents that both did and did not have this issue with erection aides. It boiled down to whether or not in the project document specs had OSHA 29 CFR subpart R 1926.756 spec'd out for use in a particular project. some of the projects called for it and some did not, and the design drawings followed suit with showing the hole locations for the ones that did spec it out. the projects that did not have the OSHA reg in the spec's did not have hole locations called out in the design drawings ( that doesn't help the erector much at all). My opinion is that a fabricator should not put holes in any locations willy nilly unless they are shown in design drawings, even though it is a safety req. by OSHA. I would think that they should be integrated by proper design by an engineer. One thought is that if they are not in the design then the erector should have noted it and known it was that way during their bidding process (costs more to weld items off before removing the hoist line) so that there would be no suprises come time to set steel.

Hello Jeremiah, I would tend to agree with you wholeheartedly about randomly adding, etc. non-engineered cuts, holes, etc. I have worked on projects where the repair aspects of some of these items caused long-lasting issues that came up repeatedly due to an erector/installers decision-making at the time of setting steel and equipment.
You may also remember the parking garage collapse at Portland International Airport a number of years ago. In that case it basically came down to an oversight on providing proper initial bolt-up and diagonal bracing application. It also cost the lives of a number of individuals. Definitely a process for properly and safely erecting any sort of steel. Best of luck to you on your work and stay safe. Best regards, Allan

A little late to chime in, but OSHA requirements and the use of erection aides such as lifting lugs and temporary connections should be determined during the detailing kick off meeting and incorporated into the shop drawings by the detailer.  The purpose of the kick off meeting is to establish guidelines and rules for the development of the project throughout detailing, fabrication, and erection.

Huh, I use the little blue pills as my aid of choice!

I use it, but not for the obvious reason.  I use it because I'm tired of peeing in my shoes.  With the high cost of things, I've recently found a cheaper alternative.  I just go to Walmart and pick up a can of Fix-A-Flat.  Not a lot of guys know this, but there's a less expensive generic brand of the drug that's due to be released soon.  It's called Mycoxafailin. There's also talk about putting it into candy bars, but they'd have to change the labels.  Oh Henry would have to be called Oh, Oh, Oh Henry.  There's also talk of adding it as an ingredient in various baked goods.  Pepperidge Farm would have to change their name to Pepperidge Firm.  I'm not sure if it would work if they decide to put it into cookies because the Keebler elves are already jammed pretty tight in that tree.

Why do they run the "Sham Wow" infomercial after the "Viagra" commercial?

ShamWow underwear. Think of putting on a pair of these on those really humid days when your butt and thighs are slipping in sweat. But with ShamWow underwear all that is absorbed and looked after with a a quick wringing at the john.  But they shouldn't be worn during the winter months or else it'll be," Mycoxafrozen".
