My resume' was on rigzone three days and I got a call . Workin' offshore ... 28 days on and 28 days off .   Bankin' !!! LOL     Seriously , if you want to work ... its out there . You just gotta go get it .  The registration on rigzone.com is free unless you want red carpet treatment ... then its $90 . The rig I'm on , there are about 25-30 guys who got their jobs through rigzone . It works !

Parent - - By pypLynr (***) Date 04-18-2009 04:06
I'm with Maersk Drilling . Its a new rig and we are floating her to the gulf of mehico from Singapore , where she was built . Its a semi-submersible oil drilling rig . Its called ' The Developer '.  I'm welding for them on some change orders and rework.

Ok, is it being towed are transported on a heavylift ship. thats along way to go on it thrusters only.
Parent - By pypLynr (***) Date 04-18-2009 23:34
We 're using the thrusters and getting towed .  And we are only cruising @ 6-8 knots. LOL  We just left Mauritius and we offloaded all the risers , so we should pick up speed now .

12" Bell Hole & Branch run out with all 5p  and 2" on 45
Parent - By turnandburn Date 04-29-2009 12:50
Hey brother Welders.

I live around the Minden La area and am looking for some work for my Rig Truck.Any leads will be deeply appreciated. The last 3 years I have been running small pipelines 2" to 6" along with Drilling Rig repairs. The being on call 24 x 7 sucks in the drilling Rig repair, but it pays the rent.Drilling Rig repairs have slowed way down from what it was a year ago.I would rather be running down a pipeline or hooking compressors up.

Ihavenever had the opportunity to take a branch.I have layed out by the pipe-fitters blue book a 12" Riser cut to fit a 12" header.I was wondering when you get the Riser clean and grinded up do you mark the line around the outside of the header or inside? As for the hole is it beveled with a grinder also or just the Riser?

I have a cousin that works for Courtney Pipeline Construction out of Carthage Texas and he says he marks his on the inside. He explained to me how to clean and bevel the Riser over the phone, but I failed to get him to explain if the hole is beveled or not.He said not to tack it in the throats or the sides and that after it is fit and tacked that it will be turned upside down and welded out 5/32nd all the way.I was also wondering if the weld is a single bead cap?I also guess the straps are nicked and pulled?

Back in the 1990`s the big lines I welded on only required a 5G 1104 or 6G B.31.3 with 4 root bends and 4 face bends no branch.

Thanks a bunch.

Bubba.

Is this job pipe with open root 7018 all the way out or 5P root & hot pass and fill & cap with 7018. I don't want to seem stupid but I have been hearing some gas companies here in GA. talking about going to 7018.

7018 is a easy rod to burn a open root , I know alot of welder can't burn them that good. I have a harder time with a 5p. Which I have a lot more time with a 7018 I burn them every day on bridges.
Parent - - By pypLynr (***) Date 04-18-2009 04:11
With a 7018 open root , do you leave a nickle or dime land on the bevel ? I've tried it with a 0 land and it looked like dog doo . LOL    I haven't had a call for it lately but I do want to get it down , so if a need for it comes up ... I got it , you know ?
Parent - By cwf07 (***) Date 04-18-2009 22:20 Edited 04-18-2009 22:33
7018 is a more fluid rod so I leave a nickle landing & opening on pipe with a 3/32 but on bridge beams I leave a 1/8 opening with no landing using 1/8 rod. Get the heat set right and move it side to side a littie bit you can make inside look like the outside. And also all of this depends on the brand of rod you uses, I am sure they all will do it just depends on which one you run the most I run atom arc, and some time if I am in a pinch hobart. I also agree with Raftergwelding you will have to play with your heat some days are better than other. After a long week under a welding hood I don't no who is tired me or my welding machine.
Parent - By raftergwelding (*****) Date 04-18-2009 22:19
5p is easier to me to run an open root with than 7018 but everybody is different and yes i run both rods all day long guess i just need to play with the heat some more or maybe try a different brand of rods but it always seems to blow thru and have lots of drips comming off of it when i try to run open root with 7018

im a 22 year old welder from kansas/oklahoma panhandle and i was pumped when i passed the 100% 7018 test for dcp on the first try...made 2 practice welds the day before.  also passed a stainless test for the on the first shot....2" schd 40

Kahunna what are they using this for? I'm assuming cause it's 7018 it's uphill? Is the 7018 better for dirty pipe or something? Just curious.

I ran a lo hi test once about a year ago. Should have practiced, I guess. After grinding off the bubble gum inside, I discovered it had tied in and passed the test. Should have failed the visual. They needed welders, I guess. If this is the newest thing, I guess I outta get it right. ( after the test, they used backing rings)
