----- Sounds too  easy...,

This is from an article in the St. Petersburg  Times Newspaper on Sunday. The Business Section asked readers  for ideas on "How Would You Fix the Economy?"

I think  this guy nailed it!

Dear Mr. President,

Please  find below my suggestion for fixing America 's economy.   Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will  squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use  the following plan. You can call it the Patriotic Retirement  Plan:

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the  work force.  - Pay them $1 million apiece severance for  early retirement with the following  stipulations:

  1) They MUST retire.  Forty  million job openings -  Unemployment fixed.
  2)  They MUST buy a new American Car.  Forty million cars  ordered - Auto Industry fixed.
3) They MUST either buy a  house or pay off their mortgage - Housing
Crisis  fixed.

It can't get any easier than that!

P.S.  If more money is needed, have all members in Congress and  their
constituents pay their taxes...

40,000,000,000,000 , don't think they are spending anything near that!

Here is my own personal plan.
Uncle Sam gives me 5 million.  I move to Barcelona.  And never come back.
And they can keep whatever I have paid into Social Security.
And I will buy a Mercedes CLK 500.   :-)

At current rates, 5 million U.S. is worth 3,848,520 EUR
So Uncle sam (every working tax payer in america chips in to send you packing) gives you 5 mil
Given that it's very unlikely you'd be allowed to work in the EU, and your net is 3.8 eur and change, is that enough to keep you alive without working?
The first thing you get hit with when you buy your house, is IVA/VAT to to the tune of 16 percent on the house. but thats chump change compared to whats coming.
Royal Decree 687/2005 is specified as a special expat tax in spain. While it may be lower than the original 43 percent, there are a lot of hidden elements to this.
You'll pay 30 percent upon declaration of intent to establish citizenship. You'll also be subject to NRIT the first 183 days.

I estimate you'll go through .5 million euro in those first 183 days by the time you get a house car and all filings settled.
Your then on your happy socialist way to being a spainard with 3.3 million Euro left. So lets say your going to live another 30 years.
Thats 33K Euro a year. It cost a lot of cash to live in Europe, especially spain. That 33K will be eaten up in a variety of taxes and fees not to mention just the cost of living which is ever rising. Then there is that whole socialist thing they are trending to more so than the U.S.

I figure you could live good for about 10 years before your out hawking that CLK 500 wishing you'd listened to people that had common sense.
Even with the trend towards socialism in the states, your still better off here than under the extreme taxes common to Europe.

Check your math . . .

Which is something I never thought I'd post in response to anything CWI555 ever posted - you're usually spot on.

30 years at 110,000Eu sounds about right to me. My brain may lie to me, but my TI-89 is usually right if the operator ID10T error doesn't foul it up.

Best regards,

Drew

math was taking into account projected tax increases, cost of living, and several other factors. There was a time when I had considered picking up and moving there myself.
By the time all the hidden cost and projections are taken into account, it's going to work out to 33K Euro a year. I didn't put the whole breakdown in but I can if you wish.
If it were just as I posted you would be correct. I was waiting on bryon to come back with your answer, but he never did.

As for questioning me, anyone can be wrong, always question everybody, as anybody can be wrong. If your not screwing up, your not thinking or working.

Gerald

OK. In that case, I'll buy a Vespa.  At 6'4", 250 lbs that would be a sight.  :-)

Respect - Booyakasha!

Dang - and I thought the 30% plus property taxes plus city/state tax on goods etc. etc. was bleeding the system dry!

I never knew it cost so much to live in Spain . . . you got any calculations on New Zealand? That's my backup plan, but I don't think I could afford it there either . . . DOH!

Kind regards,

Drew

Jon2003 or Shane Feder could help you better with New Zealand. My understanding is it either takes blood connection or $$$$$$$$$$ to get there.
Most of Europe is expensive for Americans to move to. Now if you were an immigrant from the middle east there are other provisions for them that make it not so expensive.

The EU is no different than the states in the illegal immigrant department, the only real difference is how it's handled.

Gerald
