Hello All. I was wondering if ya'll would chime in on the life expectancy of a rig truck in todays terrian. I am speaking in reference to pipeline and compressor station work. I have a 2002 Dodge 3500. Strong cummins but I'm a little concerned about the front end, tranny, and rear end. Thanks for commenting

Do you mean the truck itself or being able to keep it working?

I was asking how long before the front end is shot after carrying all that weight.

A lot depends on the driver. Some guys thrash the hell out of equipment, and it doesn't last long. Others take it easy on their equipment and it lasts a lot longer.

All the parts that wear are replacable, if You do Your own work it can be cost effective to replace & repair as needed and run a truck as it ages. If You are paying a shop $85/hour and working for less than that there comes a point where You draw the line & get a new [er] truck.

if its a dodge, from further test i have conducted, it will last forever! for you great grand-sons to get on a mainline with it! lol

Yeah, the engine will. You can trade the truck itself in for a large Dr. Pepper.

it'll will go until your pocketbook tires or you tire from having repairs made. it's just a way of life with things.

I have the same truck and mine has 204,000 miles.  I just had the transfer case rebuilt for a $1050.00 and I did front wheel bearings and upper and lower ball joints on both sides.  drives like a champ and everything else is tight.  I have a classic III D and a pretty heavy duty bed.  Unless you get a lemon i think with regular maintenence oil and gear lube changes they last a long time.

I just got my new truck rigged up, its a 2008 dodge.  My last truck was a 2003 ford with 235,000 miles on it and besides regular oil changes i've only had to replace an oil line, high pressure line on the steering, and some work done on the rear end.  Still have it as a back up truck, but for the majority it will be mostly used this summer as it will be used to pull my new boat every other weekend.
