Hey HOTPASS,

Im gonna give this a shot, if i'm wrong someone please reply
This is out of AWS D1.1 2006 if you go to section 4 Part C Performance Qualification 4.21, The welding personnel shall follow a WPS applicable to the
qualification test required. All of the WPS essential variable limitations of 4.7 shall apply
4.7.3 Base-Metal Qualification. WPSs requiring qualification that use base metal listed in 3.1 shall qualify other base metal groups in conformance with table 4.8
Table 4.8 shows you the base metal combinations allowed by pqr
so in short if it is a prequad wps and you test out from a group II then you are certified in the base metals of group I and II
Someone else please respond

Strat

Check 4.22 and Table 4.12. Base material is not listed as an essential variable for WPQR's, so any material that a WPS can be written for under D1.1 can be qualified for a welder by one test. Of course a WPS must exist for each material, but a welder is considered qualified to weld under that WPS if it matches the WPQR qualifying WPS on essential welder variables. See 1.2 for material limitations.

Material grouping is not an essential variable for welder qualification, so it doesn't matter what you test your man on.  For procedure qualification, that's another story.
