To be full pen and prequalified, you would have to address the back side of the root(back gouge)....with the BTC-P10-GF you can't gain access to the back side of the root...

can you hold the plate back and use the detail like in Figure 3.5 (bottom right detail-"side matched")page 116 of D1.1:2008 or Figure 3.6 (bott right detail-"alt detail B") on the next page.

"stacking a pitch cut piece  on top of the 12”x 2” stringer"

Does this mean you have a miter cut on the end of a tube 12 x 2  butting onto the side of a horizontal tube 12 x 2 ?
If that is the case, the page 116 details John mentioned would be appropriate

As an alternative, you could put a backing inside the pitched tube and CJP to the horizontal member.  It's kind of a "clunky" detail but could be done. But it isn't prequalified -that I can see - so you'd have to address that.

We have a solid 3/4" inch backing inside the HSS and we have been passing our UT's.
Alternate Detail B note 1 refers to table(3.6) which shows a root opening of 1/16" thru 1/4".  Will this address the backside of the root making this a prequalified CJP??

I can't quite picture the joint that you have...can you post a picture or a drawing of it so we see it and I can get my mind around what you are up against?

So then, you have the "matched box connection" shown on the lower left of page 117, and Alternate Detail B applies?

TYK's give me a headache when I wrap my brain around them - but I think you are OK provided you remain within the tolerances of Table 3.6- just as you said.  Backing isn't required there; the weld metal inside beyond the root is the "back-up weld" and is not evaluated.  But backing can be there if you wish.  Either way should give you a weld throat equal to "tb".

(Now that I've stuck my head in the noose, I'm sure someone with more TYK experiences will give it a yank.) :)
