Are welders certified to a wps for .035 wire gmaw spray, automatically be certified to a wps for .045 wire ,if thier qualification test was done with .035 wire?   D1.1 2006 has no requiremants under essential variables for welder performance (4.22) I know filler metal diameter for a wps is an essential variable requiring requalification, not sure how wire size affects welder quals.
any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks

Nathan

A welder qualified in spray transfer GMAW is qualified to weld any filler diameter.

There are however WPS limitations,  so even a prequalified WPS may need to be revised if a wire diameter increase is involved.

We are a heavy equip. manufacturer.  Although not code required, our internal welder qualification program had FCAW dia limits.  Welders using our 3/32" dia wire are required to qualify separately with that dia.

that makes sense, I'm suprised that there is no requirement in D1.1. go figure
