In reviewing (to Section IX) a suppliers welding procedures it appears that the procedure qualification was performed on a three inch piece of plate with a groove machined in it that is 3/4" deep x 1/2" wide and a 30 degree include angle. This is welded with GTAW giving a weld metal thickness of 3/4". On the WPS the base material thickness range is given as 8" max. I was under the assumption that the entire thickness of the base metal coupon would have to be welded to then apply your thickness ranges for the base metal. Where does it specify in Section IX that this is an acceptable practice? Thanks.

Heritage06,
The WPS thickness range is based on base metal thickness (see QW 451.1 and QW 403.7).
A base metal of (1 1/2") 38 mm and over with weld metal of (3/4") 19 mm and over qualifies the WPS for a base metal maximum of 8" (200 mm) and a weld metal maximum of 8" (200 mm)
Hope that helps,
Regards,
Shane
