Got an old SA 200 1978 Model,It has been 5-10 years since it was used, got it running ,Two Problems
(#1) no welding output. It will run a grinder but it turns in slow motion and it puts just a little sparkle at the end of the rod.
(#2)The idle system will stay on low idle for a short time,If pushed back. Then goes to high idle. The switch works from low to high.Just won't go back to low with out pushing it back. Acts like the electric solenoid is not strong enough to hold the governor back etc.

Thanks Tom K.

Be sure all the brushes move freely and that the commutator is clean.

Unfortunately I believe your shunts are out. Them hex machines are noted for that. Esspecialy if you have power at the 115 volt receptical. As for your solenoid, try some spray on graphite lube. They get some carosion in them after the set awhile.

and i caint sepll fur sh*t!!

solenoid plunger binding or dirty
slide linkage to carb improperly adjusted--causing too long a stroke for plunger to bottom out in solenoid

if you don't have full 110 you will not have full weld
check your engine speed at high idle

check voltage at bullet nose brush holder studs--across the 2 at high idle you should read 110
check the taped connection behind the front panel (brown and black wires taped together with 3rd wire going to board)
check the condition of the rheostat

disconnect the blue wire from the rheostat and the brown wire from the taped connection-- across the 2 you should read 41 ohms.

Thanks for the input.

Now I have an other problem...the starter is not wanting to kick in.Is there a part number that I can cross over to get a solenoid at the local parts store? After I checked the brushes the starter is messed up so have to fix that first.

Thanks Tom K

As for the solenoid on the starter, got one for a 1978 chevy truck with a 350 and it works fine now.Just thought I'd pass that along.

Solenoid:Not holding at all now, have 12-14 volt at solenoid.Must just be bad.

Voltage at front of nose.I had 6-7 volts, cleaned and now I have nothing. When I push on the brushes It goes to 90-120 volts but will not stay there,Brushes are just a little over an inch long are they worn out?Springs bad? they don't have much pressure on them

Rheosat:Tested at 64.4 ohms lowest setting and 0 ohms at highest setting

Test across the blue and brown wire: 39.6 ohms

thanks Tom K.

could be brush springs ---everything else seems to check good.

Make sure the solenoid is clean and dry (NO OIL, NO NOTHING ON PLUNGER OR IN SOLENOID)
Your linkage could be out of adjustment which is causing the plunger not to fully seat and hold.

Got new brushes and springs today. Will try them soon,What are you using to check the RPM.I have been looking for an old tach/dwell meter. The ones that I have seen only have two leads,Do you ground one side and hook the other on the stud at the mag????

Thanks Tom K

We use a mechanical tachometer that we place at the end of the bullet nose.
High idle is set on the governor and rod. (Should read 125vdc at recept)
Low idle is set with solenoid and slide linkage (Should read 90 at recept)
