Hello
I have one quick question about 316 stainless.   Can it be welded with 308L Flux Cored or does it have to be 316L?  What would be recommended and where is the best place to find this info?

Dave,

If 308L is used, then I would say no.  Based on one simple fact.  The filler material is lacking molybdenum.  One can try to find the consumable E308MoTX-X to weld 316 SS.  Yes, FCAW is and can be used on 316 SS.

Here is some helpful information.

What is the application?
What type of operating environment?
What temperature range is anticipated?
What groove detail?
What diameter electrode and what welding parameters?

There are many things to consider before saying yes or no.

best regards - Al

I agree with "803056", it is easy to answer yes to this question and be correct, 308L can successfully used on a lot of the 300 series stainless BUT ask yourself, " what's expected of this weld?", same base metal properties, same corrosion resistance, heat environment, etc. ?????????????????????

The general scheme of choice for 316 is twofold. The Moly is the main variable. Sometimes 316 is chosen due to additional strength over 304, sometimes it is chosen for Mo's resistance in reducing media. If chosen for reducing media then 316 MUST be selected as a filler metal, or a Ni based alloy (or 317, etc.) with ample Mo. If 316 is chosen for strength then the possiblity is open to use 308 flllers since the welds will be as strong as the base metal.
But the posted advice is certainly valid. In every case you need to know the service media if varying from the matching filler.
