pretty cool, this is what I use to keep cool at work http://www.vortexair.biz/Cooling/Mancooling/mancooling.html

works dam good I don't break a swet doesn't matter if it's a 100+ or what you won't swet

I've seen those thermacool radiator things before and they worked good. Chris, that vortexair is something I've never seen before! Looks cool......literally!!

the vortex air thing you never ever swet but you need a huge compressor to run it. I have a small one that drops the air temp by like 45 degrees but just orderd another one to pump more volume of air which may not drop the temp that much but it's enough to be ******* ice cubes
I never bought the vest just went to the hardware store and bought some rubber tubeing poked a bunch of holes in it and made up my own little harness.

this thing is like wearing you're car or house A/C on your body it's that dang cold

Need one of these big ones but the evaporative ones don't work well if it's really humid and will rust anything metal in a machine or tooling shop.

I have a small Port-a-Cool It works Great ! Tractor Supply $1,000.00 Worth every penny
Parent - - By FixaLinc (****) Date 07-10-2009 19:35
I'll have to look or ask at TSC.  That one I posted link to at Fastenal was most expensive one they listed for hazardous locations but they sell smaller ones too seen those in their stores.

Here is the port-a-cool link. I have the 16" with tank. It works GREAT and it is easy to handle by yourself    www.port-a-cool.com

Thanks for the link.  That's more like the ones I've seen in fastenal stores around here.  How long do the pads last ?
Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 07-12-2009 22:07
I really dont know. I have been running mine quite a bit since May. The pad is still like new
Parent - - By FixaLinc (****) Date 07-12-2009 23:05
Ok probably like others then or here depends how much dirt blows into one :)
Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 07-13-2009 00:29
Well, Here where I am it is BAD dust. I just make sure I follow the instructions to dry it out when I turn it off. No Problem
Parent - - By FixaLinc (****) Date 07-13-2009 17:48
Well that makes sense to dry it out so doesn't mold and mildew.  Porta Cool emailed me about more dealers for them too besides just TSC & Fastenal also Grainger, NAPA, Motion Industries & Applied Industrial Technologies.
Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 07-13-2009 21:13
To me, TSC is handy and nation wide. If you have a problem away from home, Just go there and exchange it. They have a service policy you can buy. I think it is 3 or 4 years and it was about 150.00 or less. Just my thoughts
Parent - By FixaLinc (****) Date 07-13-2009 22:21
We didn't have TSC here till 2 or 3 years ago and they hire some really dumb people so that's why I asked who else they had for dealers.

For $10,000 bucks you could get REAL AC installed  Holly hell.
Parent - - By FixaLinc (****) Date 07-11-2009 21:18
Yes, in a good insulated building.  They are talking portable though I think.  Notice the "hazardous location" label on that one.  It means because of a different motor and switch it cost 3 or 4 times more.  There is lots of difference in those Porta Cools than a little swamp cooler using them outdoors or on site even though the cost of them is 3 or 4 times more too.

the vortex air there are no moving parts what so ever. I just got my new one in Friday and it says it will drop the temp by 60 degrees 2500 BTU of whatever the air is coming in from the compressor so I say thats pretty dang good. Once in a blue moon you may need to clean it out with some rubbing alcohol and change two O rings and thats about it here is how it works http://www.itwvortec.com/vortex_tubes.php
Parent - - By DaveBoyer (*****) Date 07-12-2009 04:48
That is a whole lot of compressed air. 35 SCFM is about what, or more than You get from a 10 HP shop compressor, drawing about 50 amps@230 volts. I believe You could run a 10 ton air conditioning system for about the same power use.
Parent - By chris2698 (****) Date 07-12-2009 16:31
yeah it's alot of air, it's good if you work in a place with enormous compressors
Parent - - By FixaLinc (****) Date 07-12-2009 21:39
Yep saw that and shot my idea of using it while sandblasting or get a much larger compressor.  I got to get a cooler tube they make for my breathing air pump it kinds of works on same principal I think.
Parent - - By chris2698 (****) Date 07-13-2009 02:27
yeah thats what I had bought that 3m makes it's the same thing but it doesn't deliver the volume of air like the new one I bought and it was design to pump fresh cool air into you're welding shield as you weld
Parent - - By FixaLinc (****) Date 07-13-2009 17:45
Did the 3M one help much?  Wondering if breathing pump puts out enough air to work with small Vortex tube though?
Parent - - By chris2698 (****) Date 07-14-2009 00:30
ohhh you're talking about the belt you wear and it has the canisters on it pumping fresh air to you that is like 900 dollars and probally worth it. Now I can't understand why this 3m cooling thing is for your shield because there is no filtering air unless you hook up something so there is clean fresh air going through the 3m tube. I'm totally lost in what you're asking? LOL I'm tired and slow. If you're useing it for just cooling you're body as you work then buy the 2500 BTU vortec tube if you're wanting it to pump fresh air to you're welding shield to help you breathe I wouldn't use it for that
Parent - By FixaLinc (****) Date 07-14-2009 04:41
Yes, I was talking about something like this Clemco cool air tube wear on belt for blasting but it still won't work for what I was wanting and needs more cfm air flow.  I just have ambient air pump and need some kind of chiller for it or just have to setup with something else and more air and a filter.  These have to be kind of like the Vortex one just a different brand name.

Clemco cool air tube

http://www.clemcoindustries.com/products_showitem_clemco.php?item_id=309

Clemco has a vest and another tube that cools or heats air.

http://www.clemcoindustries.com/products_showitem_clemco.php?item_id=310

Marco USA sells the Clemco and Bullard hoods and respirators for blasting.
Parent - - By DaveBoyer (*****) Date 07-14-2009 03:23
The system that Chris's jacket works on is a fairly large flow of high pressure fairly cool air expands anf looses pressure after going through an orfice and in doing so the temperature drops. This requires that 1) the air has lost it'ts temperature gain from compression and 2) is free to expand and absorb the heat it has presumably lost before it got to the cooling unit.

A low pressure breathing blower does not provide the high pressure or the extraction of heat. While it may give some relief if You blow air into Your cloths, it WILL NOT drop the temperature like the vortex system.
Parent - - By FixaLinc (****) Date 07-14-2009 04:46
Yep figured that out.   I just have a ambient air pump for hood or respirator.  Need more air with filter so can use a cooler tube like the Vortex or Clemco makes a cooler tube and one that heats or cools.

How much is the Clemco brand? I paid 113 for mine but order from the itwvortec.com website and it was 110 dollars and you can order the other one that will blow cold or hot as well. Down here in Louisiana it is so freaking hot I don't need the one that blows heat.
I see that this thing is 20cfm I'd go with the 35scfm if you have the compressor that can handle it. I used it yesterday for the first time my new one and it nearly blew my cloths off compared to the other one and I never ever swet a bit yesterday.
I see on there website it is 140 and I wouldn't pay that now that I bought this one.

Don't know didn't price it just saw it in old Marco USA catalog I had as another option.  I'll probably go with Bullard because it's the brand blasting helmet I have and it and the Clemco are built and rated for breathing air.  Plus can get Bullard filters easier local.  I saw it only said for vests for the Vortec and nothing about breathing air.
