I do my roots on pipe 70-95 amps, depending on the gap. I've seen guys do it around 100 on 2 1/2 inch pipe with a large gap. Ive heard its done with allot of drag and punchinthe sides on the root, is this true?

yea you can if you can control the arc but be carefull or you will undercut the root and/or suck out the root. but now you need to realize that every machine runs different so those numbers on a machine are useless, learn to just pay attention to the way the puddle is flowing.

what size rod are you using for your root?  the majority of the time i just use 3/32 on 2"-4" at about 25-30 amps
