Is there anything in D1.1 or A.B.S. restricting the use of short arc in structural welding and where would i find it in D1.1?

David,
Are you meaning short circuit, as in GMAW-S welding? If so, it is not really restricted, it just isn't "prequalified" per Clause 3 of D1.1. So to use this type of transfer you have to qualify the welding procedure per Clause 4 in D1.1.

David,

I would not recommend the short circuiting transfer mode for structural steel.  It uses a very low current range and is better suited for thinner material.  Also, I'd think that the EOR would have to approve the use of this process.  Just because it's code approved doesn't mean it's engineer approved.
