I work in a small town fab shop and we are starting to get jobs that require the use of british standard welding symbols. I can,t spend hundreds of dollars for the bs-499 book. Can anyone tell me where I can get a wall chart or any other chart that would give me a some idea of what they mean ? Thanks Jim B.

Here's a link to a file library of some symbol files for autoCAD as well as some other program application files... Just scroll down the page until you see BSWELDSYM.ZIP then open the file with a zip utility and use it as a .dwg file on whatever version of AutoCAD you have available:

This one is an excellent book, and I have copy myself... As far as the price is concerned, look at the left side of the screen when you're in the link, and look for where it says: "Google book search, then type in the name of the book and it should give you a list of available online book vendors that will sell you the book at a variety of different prices:

Those are great resources to get you started Jim.  Your employer should include enough profit into the job to purchase all codes required.  I'd ask the customer directly for the codes.  Some big companies have great online resources available to suppliers.  Others will send you what you need.  Ask.

Good Luck,
Keith
