Both the French as well as the finnish EPR's are off to a bad start with respect to weld quality and other owrkmanship issues...

Seems like this is something that isn't necessarily exclusive to the US when it comes to questionable weld quality... Please refer to the 2nd page of the article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/29/business/energy-environment/29nuke.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

Here's another article from Bloomberg News:

I guess we are very much a Global society nowadays with respect to our cooperation in new projects as well as committing similar mistakes which is part of human nature since perfection is only something to strive for yet, realistically speaking - currently unattainable. Go figure huh??? ;)

Respectfully,
Henry

On a cool, clear morning I can see the steam from the towers at the Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant, in PA. A third reactor site is suppose to break ground there, about fifty two and a half miles from my house. I hope the Frogs aren't building THAT reactor!

I don't know about that one but, I'll get back to you as soon as I do! ;)

fbrieden,

Sorry for being ignorant. What are the Frogs?

I think the reactor is called Bell Bend.  Interestingly enough it will be the sixth one along the Susquehanna River, in PA.  If approved, construction might start in 2011 or 2012.

I take it you live Southeast of Berwick, PA.  How far is Limerick from you?

Frogs = French, as they like to eat frog legs.

Thanks...

Did not put two and two together on that one.  It makes sense now.

Had French frog legs... sauteed..  slimey and even the garlic could not save them.

Give me fried froglegs any day!

I live about 7 miles west of Limerick, You can see the cooling towers & steam from a long way off.

I read you there Dave & Fran!!!

Shippingport, PA and East Liverpool, Ohio is just down the road from me, and I can see the cooling towers of the Beaver Valley Nuclear Station from the roof where I live on clear day. It's about 35 miles from where I live. It's also owned by the same company First Energy, that owns the Davis-Besse Station so, the story below from the Cleveland Plain Dealer kind of got me just a bit concerned until I read the last report below as well as other reports also.

I grew up on the Westside of PA just a bit North of New Castle but, still in the Steel Belt.  Never really knew about the plant in Beaver Valley.  Not sure if I could ever see it.  Maybe I will try next time I head back that way.

When I used to drive down to Indiana, PA, I would see steam coming from the towers of the Shelocta power plant.  I always thought it was a nuclear plant.  I now know it is not.

I'm 52 miles northeast of Berwick, 18 miles past Scranton!
Parent - By motgar (**) Date 08-21-2009 13:22
When I spent time in Williamsport and the Lower Anthracite Region, I got to see the Berwick plant once and awhile.  Now Three Mile Island and Peach Bottom are approximately the same distance each, from where I am now.  I can never see either one of them.  Must be an elevation thing.  The only time I get to see TMI is from the I83 bridge.

Moving this thread and 3.2's similar thread to OFB&G shortly.

Ross,
I could see your reasoning for moving the other thread to the OTB&G but this thread???? There were no negative comments in this thread towards anyone at all before you moved this thread to the OTB&G... So I guess I could now start one now which is directed towards your handling of this thread...

I believe you are overreacting quite a bit here Ross. Then again, what else is new??? I know that I can  do the same sometimes as well but, don't tell me now that you can read my mind because, I know you cannot - as well as the fact that I cannot read yours also...

Otherwise we would not be here!!! Instead, we would be raking in millions from all of the casino's, or any other situation where having that sort of capability would certainly make someone very rich!!! And if I'm being totally inappropriate here, then you need a vacation from work because the last time I checked, I was living in the USA - not the Former soviet Union or China!!! Abuse of power is not a virtue in my book! This was a totally innocent thread until you somehow made it guilty of, uhmmm what was it guilty of???

Moved for off-topicness.

(I first sensed that this thread was veering off the topic of inspection when it started to accumulate recipes for main courses featuring amphibians.)

Now you're starting to sound like a politician there Ross but then again, it's your show, and I'm just a willing participant so, enjoy your power trip because. if that's how you're going to control people going off topic when someone other than the originator of the post decides to say what constitutes as slightly (No disrespect Fran & Lawrence;)) in bad taste - no pun intended ;) then you have made it extremely difficult for someone who wants to share a news story that is of relevance for that section they choose to post it in.

And now I'm starting to think that we're moving closer to the policies that mirror those of the Communist state of China with your form of censorship -
plain and simple.

Nobody is perfect in here, including yourself so lighten up there Ross because, it doesn't suit you to be so restrictive at all. ;) At least that's been my observation of late. :) :) :)

Anywho, whoops!!! I guess I better be careful how I end this because, who knows how you will react over something that was written with no intent of malice or ill will in it.

I hope that the rest of your week turns out to a better one than the one you've had so far besides, it's Wednesday!!! "The HUMP day" - Whoops!!!

I hope you don't take that as being inappropriate because I wrote it! I mean, you have managed to take political correctness to heights unimaginable previously so, I guess you do deserve at least some sort of credit for doing so!!! I better stop here before you censor me for uhmm...
What is it that you'll be censoring me for??? Oh yeah, now I remember...Being Politically Incorrect!!! - Go Figure huh???

Censoring is too good for you, Henry.

For you, we have the re-education camps.

Well there you have it folks... Ross has finally confessed!!! Need I say any more??? I think not!!!
And I thought you were one of the good guys Ross... Hmmm, I guess I'm getting a bit soft on first impressions... Oh well - nobody said that life was supposed to be fair!!! ;) ;) ;)

Now, about those re-education camps... Will you be there also??? Because if you're not there, then "Fuggedaboudit!!!"
Besides, If you don't provide for my chemotherapy, four star accommodations, special dietary requests and olympic size swimming pool to keep me in somewhat good shape (Round is a shape!!! ;)) while I'm there, then once again, "Fuggedaboudit!!!" "Bad-a-bing, Bad-a-BOOM, Bad-a-BANG!!!" CAPECHE???

A new phrase has been coined......off-topicness! :)

Yeppers!!!

We tend to have a habit of doing that sort of stuff around here quite often!!! :)
