Stephan,

Due to the numerous demands to tentatively require DBI 1.30 and DBD::mysql 2.9002, we are making the change.

Don't ever say we are not responsive to our forum peeps!

OK, it took a while but the upgrade is done. Don't see much difference yet, but it feels "snappier."

Ummm, ross.....something happened to my menus...I don't have certain buttons any longer.
Parent - - By ross (***) Date 10-13-2009 15:25
Buttons like "New Posts" will now show up only when there are new posts. Some of the menu items moved around. What are you missing?

I have a particular user's posts hidden.  Until now, they would show up as "hidden posts" with no user name, and if I wanted to see what they'd said, I'd click something (I forget what) and that person's posts would show up for the full thread.

Now, instead, I get a blank post with that user's ID shown, but no option to unhide their posts on a per-thread basis.

Let me try that out.

ross, I tested this "ignore" feature and it happens to me also, there is no way to unhide the individual post without taking the username out of the ignore box.

Any further word?

Looks to me like if you are ignoring someone, you see the header without the content. Then you click on the little white box (which has a dash in it) to the left of their name, and then post content shows. Doesn't that work for y'all?

Edit: Actually you can click anywhere on their username bar and the full comment appears.

Yeah, okay, that works, but how is anyone supposed to know that clicking the "collapse branch" icon will, instead of collapsing the branch, have the result of showing that person's comments?

Hg
Parent - - By ross (***) Date 10-20-2009 14:46
No, I corrected myself. Click anywhere on the bar.

Edit: I don't think this changed from the previous versions.

Ross

Previous version had an explicit "show this user" or somesuch.  I forget the exact wording, but it told you right out how to show the user's comments.  No need to read entrails in order to figure out what the programmer intended us to do.  As it is now, there's not even a hint that clicking anywhere in the bar might work, since the pointer doesn't change from arrow to hand anywhere in that bar, which usually indicates there's something clickable.

>Previous version had an explicit "show this comment/post from user"

Yeah, I remember something like you describe.
Parent - - By ross (***) Date 10-20-2009 14:58
I think it's pretty intuitive, to click on the post to make it unhide, but you have a point. (The WPS sometimes has to be very explicit.)

Ross
Parent - By HgTX (***) Date 10-20-2009 15:05
I'm not in the habit of randomly clicking around in apparently non-clickable areas just to see what happens.  If the pointer is an arrow rather than a hand, that usually means there's nothing to click.  If you people have chosen to program it differently from how graphic interfaces normally work, then you should expect questions.

Maybe add a note about the ignore user/show comment feature in here--> http://www.aws.org/cgi-bin/mwf/forum_help.pl

...just a thought

Here's my suggested text:

TO UN-IGNORE SOMEONE WHOSE GUTS YOU HATE:
First, click randomly all over the page until their post appears. Next...regret that you bothered. Capiche?

Ross
Parent - By jwright650 (*****) Date 10-20-2009 17:36
LOL.......Capiche!

A little wordy compared to a simple "unhide", no?

The problem is a user who goes back and forth between really useful technical stuff and utter lunacy in non-technical stuff.  I can usually tell by the responses and other context whether it's Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde posting, and thus whether it's safe to look.  (And, yeah, sometimes I get a little curious about what Hyde is up to.)

Hg

The next version is going to have an icon that shows whether a poster is currently in a Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde mood. (Uses brain waves.) But I like your solution of detecting it by the responses of others.
