what's difference between linear slag inclusions and slag inclusion and why it is not possible to find linear slg inclusion by Visual Inspection?

Once you know what slag inclusion is, you will have your answer.

And what's your opinion about visual inspection test for linear type.

Slag inclusions is slag trapped between layers of weld metal, caused by insuffiant cleaning/grinding.

Hi,

Since in this world no one has got x-ray eyes, slag inclusion cant be detected by VT......

I think you forgot Superman.

I don't think Superman has any inspection credentials :-)

He can be used (once calibrated) as a remote visual tool :)

AWS 3.0
Slag inclusion: A discontinuity consisting of slag entrapped in weld metal or at the weld interface.

ASME B31.1 (07)
slag inclusion: nonmetallic solid material entrapped in weld metal or between weld metal and base metal.
Table 136.4.1 Weld imperfections indicated by various types of examinations
Slag inclusion is listed with Note 2 for Visual
Note (2) Discontinuities are detectable when they are open to the surface.

There are many others, but slag is in fact possible to find on the surface.
A slag inclusion can show up anywhere in the weld, Root, Crown, or in the Fill.

For those open to the surface, no 'superman vision' or calibration of the same is required.

Gerald,

most excellent and most professional - as always!

I have tried to find a picture on the www, showing a linear slag inclusion open to the surface, and found it on a German Car Mechanics' website(!).

I would like to embed this picture just as a humble addendum to your excellent response.
