Yes field splices Do yall do a lot out in texas

TxDOT used to have field splices on all plate girder jobs; now I believe they give the contractor bolted & welded options.

TxDOT's construction specs are at ftp://ftp.dot.state.tx.us/pub/txdot-info/des/specs/specbook.pdf
(It's a big file, 6MB, so you probably don't want to try it on a slow connection.)
Item 448 is field welding.

How do yall price the butt splices.I am pricing 2 job here in Ga. 1 72" girders with 48 splices & the other 1 is 48" girder & W36x247 beam with 54 splices all together.

If you get that job and need a hand let me know. I've got GDOT certification already. But the way work is now if you can get it done on time by yourself thats the way to go.

Were are you located, and do you have the 4&6G cert.
Parent - - By strother (***) Date 11-13-2009 01:07
Wilkes County , about 1/2 way between Augusta and Athens . I'm about 25 minutes from I-20 thomson exit . I certified 6g unlimmited thickness , The inspector told me that covers everything under DOT but I have get approval for butt splice . I don't think that would be a problem.

Whats the welding procedure? I guess what I'm asking is why do you need 400 amps ?
Parent - - By cwf07 (***) Date 11-14-2009 02:47
All the welds the state ut them you need a 400 amp machine to burn 1/4 rod the flanges a 24" wide & 2" thick it will take a long time with a 5/32 rod.The state don't think a smaller machine will hold a arc as stable as a bigger machine after 8hr burning rods.

I was wondering if was a state requirement. Have you had any problems with DOT inspectors? I've only and to deal with one and he's okay.
Are Ya'll welding 7018 all the way?
Parent - - By cwf07 (***) Date 11-14-2009 03:21 Edited 11-14-2009 03:34
All welding done for the state of GA. is with a 7018 they will not accept nothing else unless its 80ths steel or weather steel they use 8018 C3. Yes thats state requirement you can call the lab were you take your dot test and talk to Kevin he over all state welding.
Parent - - By strother (***) Date 11-14-2009 03:35
I think Kevin is who I talked to last year before I tested . Bill Holloway supervised my tests . I had to certify for feild welder and qualify my shop for the jobs I was doing it was a combination of fab and onsite work .I've got to  retest in Jan. Bill said my cert. covers butt splice but they only let a certain number of welders do them.
Parent - - By cwf07 (***) Date 11-14-2009 03:50
Yes their are just a couple of use that the state will let splice beams in Ga.They use to let anybody that pass the 3 & 4 G test splice beams, they had a few bad welder out their that didn't know how to set them up, So they stopped it and know they don't want no body to do them unless you got experience in them I have been doing beams for the state of Ga. since 1996.

Sound like pretty good work . I just got into some DOT the last couple of years a little bit of stuff in Augusta. I haven't done any bridge work , I'd like to but just have made any good contacts.
Parent - By cwf07 (***) Date 11-14-2009 04:17
It's been pretty good to me this year I slow up a lot about 3 weeks ago I still got a little bit of work to finish up on a contract job in Columbus, just waiting on the contractor call me and tell me when they are finish pouring the deck.
