im currently building some rather large ramps out of 2024 1/4 in plate. I have been using 4043 wire .035 dia. but was having alot of feed issues in my push pull gun, so i switched to some 5356 alloy wire same dia. now with that being said ive never used 5356 before and now im having alot of crack issues usually starting from the end (crater) and going back down the center of the weld some times several inches.
my question i guess is, Is 5356 alloy wire compatible with 2024 alluminum and if so what am i doing wrong with it
                                                                                 thanks

Hello Joe, I believe your issues lie in the choice of alloy that you have. Unless I'm mistaken, 2024 is considered a type of tooling plate and is not considered a weldable aluminum alloy. I was trying to find some information to back this up but haven't come across it yet. As soon as I do I will provide that or else some of the other folks on the forum can likely cite it for you. Best regards, Allan

Allan is right.

2024 is considered unweldable with arc processes.

If it is an ornimental application that is another matter.  (but ramps don't sound ornimental)

for structures or sheet..  another base metal should be selected.

It is not considered weldable like Allan said.

Magna 505 DC (Arc welding) can actually welds all grades of aluminuim and all wrought grades including the difficult 5xxx, 2xxx, 6xxx series. It is impossible to weld the copper-alloyed aluminium's, the magnesium, and silicon alloyed aluminium and Magna 505 is the one electrode that is capable of welding every type and analysis aluminum.

This magna 505 has been used as a filler in code dirven procedure qualification testing?

Tell us more.

I'm skeptical

Ok  Here it is folks... The solution to all your aluminum joining needs.

And as advertized...... >>>drum roll please<<<

"Makes Any Welder an Expert"!!!!!!!

http://www.magna303.com/images/pdf_magna/dis_505.pdf

http://www.breckocorp.com/magna505.htm

also advertized to be *stronger* than all aluminum base metals....  (Not sure this is a real advantage though)

"It is impossible to weld the copper-alloyed aluminium's"

"Magna 505 is the one electrode that is capable of welding every type and analysis aluminum"

Doesn't 2024 contain copper?   Does Magna 505 do the impossible?

Perhaps labib will be so kind as to share his data with us, so that we may be enlightened.

I have a long and storied hate affair with aluminum SMAW.  It had been a necessary evil at times throughout my 20 years in the Navy, and every time using it makes me cringe to this day! :)

Sounds like a SMAW version of "Duraluminum"  Yeah right!!!!

Bozak! I remember them friggin rods also and did they ever SUCK SUCCATASH!!!

Respectfully,
Henry

thanks everyone i really wish i would have asked earlier i wasted over 40 hours cutting all pieces out for 12 ramps before i started welding but i guess ill chalk it up to experiance. thanks again for the lesson
