I'm trying to inspect EB welds on fuel nozzles that have the flush symbol on the print.  The question is since we don't live in a perfect world, what is the tolorence for flush + or -
Thanks in advance

AWS

btw, you didn't specify which AWS code, so I shot you the answer for D1.1. I don't know your application, but I doubt D1.1 will apply directly if it's fuel nozzles.
There should be a similar paragraph in whichever version your using.

I ran out of time yesterday, but I was going to ask you which of the AWS codes you were working to as they are numerous.
Gerald has given you about the best reply considering that the particular code was not mentioned directly. Butt joints should be at least nominal base material thickness due to the EOR's design calcs. Table 6.1 and Fig. 5.4 address the +/- visual acceptance criteria in D1.1.
Hope this helps.

2008 D1.1
Para 5.24.4.1 Flush Surfaces.
Butt welds required to be flush shall be finished so as to not reduce the thicknesses of the thinner base metal or weld metal by more than 1/32 in. (1mm) or 5% of the material thickness, whichever is less. Remaining reinforcement shall not exceed 1/32 in (1mm) in height.

Your tolerances are therefore +-1/32".

Caveat; if it's a faying surface or contact surface all reinforcement will be removed.

Thanks to all. Sorry I forgot which AWS code; it's 1.6 (stainless), but I'm not sure if engineering dept. here understands API or not. I'll look at table 6.1 fig 5.4, and try to get more info. It's not a contact surface, but our engineering department is trying to blame a vendor for not fabricating to the print.  When I looked at the code It seems that the tolorence should have been in the tail of the symbol, and it wasn't.

Thanks again!!!

D1.6;2007
As referenced by Figure 5.2 (E)"Typically unacceptable groove weld profiles in butt joints"
5.11.6 finishing of groove welds in materials 1/8" thick and greater with a reduced finished contour of flush shall not be reduced by more than 1/32" or 10% whichever is less.

Thats the AWS variant. If this is a reference from spec/contracts or an API standard, it could be modified.
