Good day Gentlemen

I am searching through D1.1 (2006) for information regarding the reinforcement on the backside of an open butt vee groove. Figure 5.4 says 1/8" max face reinforcement, however nothing specific about the root. Does the 1/8" max apply in this case too? I ask this because, I have a welder who is brushing up to take his D1.1 qualification test (GTAW) 2g and 3g on 3/8" thick A36 plate, and his melt through is is close to 3/16" in some places. Everything else looks nice, but I have concern about the excessive buildup on the back side. Thoughts???

Thanks

Jason

Hmmmm.. interesting point.  Does the code say "reinforcment" or does it say "FAce reinforcement"?

If it says only reinforcement, that would apply to either face or root.  But if it specifically says "Face reinforcment" then thats a different situation. I don't have my code in front of me to check.

Fig 5.4(D) addresses both sides and shows you a dimensioned example.

Thanks again guys, but I found what I was looking for in 4.8.1.1(b) I was in a hurry, and just needed to flip through a few more pages. The figures in 5.4 seem to be welded from both sides, and doesn't show a vee groove that is welded from one side, that's why I wasn't sure.

Good find...I missed that one altogether.

Gentlemen,
Fig 5.4 D does not have a dimension for root reinforcement and 4.8.1.1 only applies to WPS quals not production.

js55,
See 4.30 Unless there is a typo, it says in 4.30.1 to use 4.8 for the acceptance criteria(welder/welding operator qual).

Sorry John. I went back and reread the original post. Always helpful. We ARE talking about qualification. My mistake. 4.8.1 IS applicable.

To go back to comment on JS55's comment.
My intrepretation of Figure 5.4 is that any reinforcement over 1/8" is unaceptable, whether it's face or root.
I look at 5.4 as just an illustrated example, its a picture of whats acceptable and unacceptable.  This visual guide is easier to read and understand than the text sometimes.
But I'd still say any reinforcement over 1/8" is too much.
Just my thoughts
