I have an european manufactured aircraft muffler that needs repair. I know a little bit about it and need advice on where to find the right welding rod in the US.

The material number is 1.4576 (I'm told 1.4580 or 1.4583 would also be acceptable). I have found this much information on the web from a maunfacturer in Germany:

TIG 4576
SG X5 CrNiMoNb 19 12

ER 318
Austenitic welding rod, ELC-quality, for TIG-welding of stabilised
and unstabilised corrosion resistant CrNi-steels. Resistant against
grain destruction up to 400 °C.
approvals on request

Material No.: 1.4401, 1.4404, 1.4406, 1.4408, 1.4410, 1.4417,
1.4429, 1.4435, 1.4436, 1.4437, 1.4571, 1.4573, 1.4580, 1.4583

Any advice would be welcome.

Recip. aircraft exhaust are commonly made from 321 S/S and welded with ER347 filler.

The werkstoff number 1.4576 is a type 318 stainless steel. This stainless steel is a variant of the type 316. The difference being that the minimum quantities in the ranges of alloying materials is a little higher than 316. (Although the nominal composition is similar.) In addition, it has been stabilised with Niobium.

You can weld this with an ER318 filler. In the absence of this, you can try using ER347, although this filler does not have the Mo additions and is therefore more prone to pitting corrosion.

Hope this helps
