Guys,I need some input, I have the 1992 version of D1.4.

I need to confirm the correct filler metal for welding A706 #4 rebar to A36 plate with SMAW.

In my 1992 code I come up with E8018, but I'm being told it's ok to use E7018 by the guy in the field.  I can't figure out how he came up with this, is it a change since 1992? He's out of range for today so I can't talk to him.

Any help is appreciated.
Chris

strength of filler metal for matching can be governed by the strength of the weakest member.   D1.4 clause 5.1.2
OK, have D1.4 (2005) in front of me now, 5.1.2 says "when joining different grades of steels, the filler metal SHALL be selected for the lower tensile strength base metal"

Chris,

There are cases where 70 series is acceptable.  I'm at home, so I don't have access to my D1.4  I'll give you the info tomorrow when I can get to my D1.4

Duke,
Yeah I see it now that you pointed that out, I only saw the table calling for E80XX, but it's that note you stated that allows me to use E70XX.
Thanks Guys,
Chris

I was scanning through old messages on D1.4 and thought I would add to this thread that Table 2.1 dictates to the engineers when undermatching is allowed depending on the type of weld and the expected stresses on the weld.
