If a welder is qualified with SMAW, SA36 plate (no backing) in the 3G and 4G positions is that welder qualified for all fillet and groove welds including pipe regarding the AWS D1.1 code ?

See Table 4.9 in AWS D1.1:2002. Page 140.

Kpauley,
If I may ask, what is your interpretation of table 4.9 in connection to my question?

only on pipe greater than 24" diameter for groove welds (note 3).....dont forget about the thickness limitations

I believe you need to look at Table 4.8. And the way I interpret the table, the welder would be qualified for all fillet welds in any position. Grooves in pipe would be limited to pipe over 24 inches in diameter with backing, backgouging or both. For partial penetration groove welds in pipe and box tubing the welder would not be qualified for welds with a groove angle less than 30 degrees. And of course the dihedral angle restrictions for fillet welds. Hope this helps.

In response to your interpretations addressing my welder qualification question : I do agree 100% with the replys.
Thought I would pass it by the forum, sometimes the obvious is overlooked or misunderstood.
Thank You for your input.
