I'm the quality control personnel for our Fabrication shop, we just got approved by Los Angeles city two weeks ago. Does anyone know where to order a custom indent stamp to label high strength steel?

Do you mean  ASTM  A 572  Grade 50  or  A 517 /A514  ( T - 1 )  material  ?

Yes that is the steel we need to identify. Do you know where we can get the stamp made?

Hello veniceiron, If I am understanding you correctly, you are looking for "low stress" custom stamps to be used for marking parts. I believe the others might possibly be misunderstanding what you are looking for and just thinking of custom "design" stamps, of which there are likely many places that can provide these. Is that the case here? If so, letting everyone know that these stamps would be custom as well as low-stress design will likely provide the necessary information to find the correct stamp manufacturer. A bit for your consideration. Best regards, Allan

I'm not clear whether you need "low stress" stamps or not, but for marking our galvanized steel we use an impact gun from Hilti with the stamp head that allows several combinations of letters(8 spaces, I think) that is usually enough to mark our piece marks, shop order, sequence#, and column direction. All of that info takes 3 strikes, but it is much faster than stenciling with single hand stencils hit with a hammer.

Our DX750 with stencil marking head attached.

Stencils:

Not sure if they have low stress stencils, so keep that in mind if interested in this marking system. link below:

edit:...added pics of the stencils

John,
If memory serves me correctly, they do have "low stress" stamps.

That's good to know also...Our shop is looking at the FC endorcement at some point and we might need them.

Are they specifically requiring low-stress stencils?

We are looking for a custom indent stamp with my initials, company logo, and grade of steel. We can use a low stress  stamp, but either way we are having trouble locating a place to have such a stamp made.

Your normal stamp won't work on the Gr. 50?  That's surprising.

Or you didn't have a stamp before, and L.A. is requiring one?  Maybe, if it's their requirement, they can offer some suggestions for who makes such a thing?

A web search for "custom steel stamp" brought up this:

FWIW,
There are 2 styles of Low Stress stamps. One looks very similar to any run-of-the-mill stencil, but has a rounded configuration and can be confused with "high(?)" stress stamps unless one has excellent eyesight or uses a magnifier. The other type is a beaded design and definately not mistaken. My set which was purchased (special order) from my LWS looks similar to the old dot matrix computer printers from the late '70's early '80s.
I use them for all my stamping as an upgrade...just in case, since they are not going to be confused.
