You will have needed to be inspecting welds and have documentation attesting to it besides the money and an eye exam.
15.4 The SCWI and CWI requesting renewal of certification
shall attest to having no period of continuous
inactivity greater than two years in activities as described
in AWS B5.1, Specification for the Qualification of
Welding Inspectors during the previous three years of
certification.
The SCWI and CWI not meeting the requirements
of 15.4 may renew by taking the CWI Part B Practical
exam and meet the scoring requirements in 6.2.2 of
this standard.

I have never used my CWI but have been employed in the welding trade during the three year period. So I guess my CWI will be null and void? Can't I just put down my company name and title as AWS certified welder? Will this be enough or MUST it be inspection only?

I turned down inspection job offers because they involved too much travel (family wanted me home) and I have a nice paying welding job close to home. Please don't tell me I wasted all that time and money. Thanks

Thanks waccobird. I'll put the papers into AWS next week and see what happens. I hope you're right as I put a lot of time and money into getting the CWI. I took the seminar out of town on my own dollar and studied for months. It cost me over $3300. Even though I've never used it, I sure would hate to lose it. I hope to use it some day in the future but the travel was not possible at the time due to family issues. I have a steady, well paying job but it might not last much longer in this rotten economy. The writing is on the wall................
