Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Technical Standards & Publications / D1.1 Preheat for Arc Gouging?

I thought I saw somewhere in D1.1 that you have to pre-heat the base material for arc gouging, as well as welding.  This would be for thick material like 2" thick.
I can't seem to find it anywhere.  Can anyone help?

thanks Chris

Chris
I never heard that before and don't recall seeing it in D1.1.
But the air Carbon Arc guide from Arcair has a note saying if you need preheat to weld it then use preheat to gouge it.

Learn something new daily works for me thanks.
Good Luck

Chris...I don't have time to look right now, but check your D1.5, it might be in there vs the D1.1.

That might be where you saw it in Section 12.
I'm just guessing so look and see.
Gotta run, I'll check in later today to see if you found it......

Check with the AISC Steel Construction Manual. I seem to recollect a requirement for preheating for certain materials over a certain thickness prior to thermal cutting being performs.

Groups 4 and 5 materials all require 150°F preheat before coping and then MT after cutting the copes or rat holes.

Yes, but I think that a group 4 requires the web to be over 1.5 inches thick for MT to be required.
