Welder performance qualification on 6 inch sch 80 C.S.   1st two passes tig and stick 7018 fill and cap.
Design calls out weld detail for a 2 inch sch 80 support leg full pen weld.  is the person qualified or does he have to qualify on a 2 inch test to be within the code permitted range.  This is not an open butt just full pen.  This is a pressure boundary weld.
Is this common?  I normally have seen fillet welds used to attach the dummy support legs.
Any comments would be appreciated.

ASME Section IX Table QW-452.3 indicates that a performance qual on 6" pipe would give you a mimimum diameter of 2-7/8" allowed. For 2" pipe the qual should be on 2-7/8"diameter coupon. Not seeing a drawing of what you are welding it is hard to visualize a full penetration weld that is not some type of open butt. Best to ask whoever designed this joint 'why' fillet not used. Seems to make more sense and in that case the welder would be qualified to make the weld (QW-452.6). Hope that helps.

To clarify the configuration.  The symbol is a single bevel prep depicting CJP.  No gap.  There is not a fillet on top.   The welder is qualified down to 2 7/8 which is 2 1/2 inch pipe.  As stated in previous post usually a fillet is used for several reasons.   This may be one reason fillets are used to prevent this from coming up.
