I have used a friend of mine 300d. Now he is wanting to sell it. It welds good but when you first crank it up it takes about 30 to 50 seconds before the oil pressure gauge gets up to pressure. He says that is because he runs synthetic oil. It has 6900 hrs on it   What would be considered high hrs. I can get it for 4500 bucks any input on this deal would be appreciatted

What Year is it ?
Parent - By robgreg1978 (**) Date 05-06-2010 01:55
I'm not sure on the year. I will find out in the morning. I was thinking 03 or 04. He said he would let the leads and remote go with it.

I would be more concerned with the HOT oil pressure at low idle.

Do You hear bearing knock at start up? The time delay might be from a small gage orfice.

How does it start in cold weather?
Parent - - By robgreg1978 (**) Date 05-06-2010 02:01
It does not knock at all. The coldest weather that I have personally used has only been down around 34 degrees or so but it cranked up good using the glowplug button. I used it for 12 hr shifts for 2 weeks and it ran good everyday , but I was heliarcing the bead and filling in capping with 1/8 7018. Did not get to burn any big rods.

The 300D is a great welder and nothing against your friends welder but it seems like he might be a little high on the price. I now a guy who has a 07 300D with the Perkins and just a little over 1000 hrs and he would sell it for 6500 with a remote. Last time I talked to him he still had it. If you are interested in it PM me and I will give you his phone number

The School I went too says that, 4500 is cheaper than 6500
Parent - - By okwelder82 (***) Date 05-06-2010 02:33
I never said it that 6500 was cheaper than 4500 did I?  Im saying for the hours on the machines I think the one for 6500 was a better buy.  But what do I know,  my names not Cactus!!!!

It took a while but I have to admit, your learning !!
Parent - By okwelder82 (***) Date 05-06-2010 02:44
All im saying is 6900 hrs is a bunch and I think that 4500 seems a touch high on the price.

I agree with Smooth Operator's post below that the engine should go 10,000 hours or a little more between rebuilds [with proper maintainance].

Consider this when You decide what You are willing to pay.

If you dont buy it, let me know

Robgreg1978, Alot of const. co. that use equipment w/small diesels & rentals look at the 10,000 hr. mark to turnover  (get rid of) PS. GO PENS!!!!!

Thanks for the input. And that's what I wanted to know is about how many more hrs could I expect out of this machine and to get a idea on the going rate of this machine. The last time I bought a machine was 3 years ago and all of them was high  so with the economy down I was wanting to know if this was high or low or average. I come to Wyoming 2 times a year and that's where this machine is and I   Live in Texas. I can not haul this machine due to me having to pull my camper home. But I could give one of my buddies a little diesel fuel to get it back, but if it's not a good deal I will wait till I get back to Texas to look for one. Atleast somewhere in the southern states. Thanks for the input

I know an oilfield welder who has had 2 SA-250`s, with the Perkins motor. He was good at changing the oil on time and doing whatever routine maintenance is involved to get the most life out of an engine, and he sold the first one when it had 12,000 hours on it, and never had to overhaul the motor. The guy he sold it to said it is now up to 14,000 hours and still going,no overhaul. The second SA-250 the oilfield welder has is up to 8,000 hours and going strong. When I bought my Classic 3 from a 798 pipeline welder,he said he was just over hauling his SA-200 gas welder, and it had 10,000 hours on it,real good for a gasoline engine. I also bought a Vantage 300 with the Kubota motor and really like it. Before I bought it I called a service rep for Kubota out of Texas[I believe it was the main office in the U.S.] and he said they had 2 customers down there that had Kubota engines with very high hours and still going strong. One was running a generator and  the other was running an irrigation pump. One had 22,000 hours and  the other had 28,000 hours. The one with 22,000 had just routine maintenance done and the one with 28,000 hours just needed a water pump, along with regular maintenance. This, if so is excellent.

Yeah, them Vantages are pretty nice. If you aint got a 300 D, they will do in a pinch, I reckon.
Parent - - By okwelder82 (***) Date 05-09-2010 12:47
Those Vantages are one of the best looking generators I have ever seen!!
Parent - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 05-09-2010 13:28
You need a generator like the Vantage, so it will power the lights for the Mechanic, so he can see to work on you 300D !   (While I am still welding)

There's Lincoln's new poster boy for the Vantage.  Atta boy Mr.Harnish!
Parent - By nevadanick (**) Date 05-09-2010 20:10
I would test it with a "known good" mechanical gauge, because it shouldnt take anywhere near that long, could be a leaky suction line on the engine oil pump, worn engine, whatever the case its not right.  I wouldnt run sythetic unless you are in a really cold environment.
