Is percussion stud welding classified as a type of resistance welding?

I don't think so.  There is a large energy discharge event that causes a weld puddle to form into which the stud is pushed.

Resistance welding is a much slower event where the heating occurs slowly and the parts are squeezed together before the energy flow.

CD stud welding is well known for being an extremely fast process.  It kicks butt.  They can place a gun on a robot drive or gantry with an automatic stud feeder and do hundreds of welds in a very short time.

CD stud welding can also join many dissimilar materials that can not be welded with any other process.
