Dear Experts,
Need some advice regarding welding on I-Beam to I-Beam with WT 25.0 mm according to D1.1.
1. For top & bottom flange, is it allowed to do double-vee bevel preparation?
2. For web, is it ok if we proceed with single bevel and come out with backgouged/backweld?
3. What of type NDT required exactly regarding this joint & thicknesses (NDE drawing shows MPI for all weldment).
Please advice.
Thank You.

Assuming you are using prequalified welding procedures, you can use any combination of prequalified groove details depicted by the figures in 3.3 (partial joint penetration) or figures in 3.4 (complete joint penetration).
The NDT is VT as a minimum. The engineer can specify other NDT in addition to VT. With you last comment (3), it appears MT is specified.

Is your splice specified on the drawing or otherwise approved by the engineer?

Thanks for the replies, but there is slightly some issue regarding drawing. FYI, this beam connection for main skid beam. All engineering design/drawing built by client consultant.
1. Our client specification / inspection requirement shows UT regardless wall thicknesses for this structure application (but drawing already get AFC stamped from our client). I am
wondering which requirement should be followed, and it might be NCR issuance from client inspector by the end of this project.
2. There is no joint details for beam-to-beam connection. e.g. cut length for insert beam and D1.1 part reference. Please help.

qcweld,
The governing document is your clients specification.
This overrules anything on an AFC drawing.
If it is more stringent than the applicable code then it overrules that as well.

Shane
See D1.1/2010 2.18 Prohibited Joints and Welds. 2.18.2 states that bevel-groove and J-groove are unacceptable in flat position if V or U joints are practicable.
And THEN.. I see, thanks to Supermoto, that pertains to Cyclically loaded conditions. Seems you have to pay close attention to how that code is put together.
Hey...how'd you get a 2010 edition already?
Our 2010 just came in today.
I just got mine about 5 minutes ago. :-)

Do you mind if mail to me those D1.1 soft copy?
Thanks
