"See D1.1/2010 2.18 Prohibited Joints and Welds.  2.18.2 states that bevel-groove and J-groove are unacceptable in flat position if V or U joints are practicable."---quote from another thread

See 2.17.2 in D1.1:2008 for the same reference.

What does it matter, if the joint is to be back gouged from the other side.......if you have a lack of penetration to the bottom of the groove, you will be gouging it out and rewelding anyway.

I'll toss in a guess John

Maybe because the "J" and the Single bevel both have 1/2 of the joint as a square groove, the thinking might go something like.. There might be some greater risk of lack of fusion on the unprepared side of the joint...  While  Single Bevels are pretty standard stuff in horizontal applications I could see them being used in the flat positon in order to reduce edge prep time as well as reduced arc on time, filler usage etc.  Which seems llike a good idea unless there is some risk for reduced consistancy...???

Just a guess.

Yeah, that was my thinking too....and if the joint was a one sided PJP....I could see the rational.

How about uneven stresses because of the difference in the geometry of the two sides of the joint?  Maybe not a factor in many cases, but could be an issue in others?

Also the way the HAZ and molecular alignment of carbon and other alloys would align because of differing heat transfer with the change in angle of the two faces of the groove.

Just adding more questions, totally unknown to make a definitive statement.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

Not sure what the reason for the restriction but in 2010 D1.1 on page 77 on note c states:

Cyclic load application     places restrictions on the use of this detail for butt joints in the flat position (see 2.18.2)

Not sure if anyone else saw this in the new edition.

Ahhhhh, OK. Thanks for the reply....I'm still waiting on my copy of 2010.
