We have a DOT job that requires wet welding on SA53 pipe. There are underwater electrodes available over the internet, however, the ones I've seen do not have an AWS designation (Black Beauty, Barracuda). I have been told the US Navy uses E6013 for carbon steel (underwater). If anyone is experienced in wet welding with E6013, I would appreciate knowing which manufacturer and specific product is most recommended. Thanks, Charles Hall

try Broco in CA or Oxylance in AL
There is currently no U/W electrode classification but we are working on one in the AWS D3B sub-committee on U/W welding
Lincoln brand E6013 coated with Benjamin Moore Spar Varnish is one type I've seen used. McKay brand (if still available) E309-16 coated with spar varnish also works well for carbon steel welding. You'll get less porosity with the stainless rods as they are more tolerant of the hydrogen generated by the underwater arc. The carbon steel electrodes listed in the Navy manual are 1/8", 5/32" and 3/16" E6013, E7014, E7016 and E7018. The waterproofing materials they list are:
Epoxy 152
Sea-Lac 30-L2093
Non-petroleum-based, clear, polyurethane

I concur with adavis and MBSims. Over the years I have had Broco coat E309L-16, E308L-16, and E316L-16 depending on the application. Suggest you contact the diving contractor you intend to use, they may already have a suitable procedure qualified.
