I am trying to develop a WPS based upon a prequalified joint in D1.1:2000, Fig 3.4, Joint B-U2a-GF.  The book states that this is good for all positions except Horizontal.  I will be doing horizontal welding in my shop.  So I will need to develop a PQR.  If I do a PQR, can I have just one WPS that includes the infomation for the B-U2a-GF and the PQR for the horizotal position or does this need to be two different WPS's?

welderla,

Look into joint designation B-U4a-GF.  It is prequalified.

It is also used as the optional test plate for welder qualification, in the horizontal position.

Figure 4.30 and Figure 4.32 in AWS D1.1:2006

Just an idea, hope that helps.

If you are working to D1.1, you can combine prequalified and qualified WPSs.

Al, I think you missed what I was trying to say.  That joint doesn't include horizontal.  Inorder to have a WPS that includes hortizontal I had to do a PQR separate.  Can I put the details of that PQR on the WPS for the prequilfied joint?

If you want to borrow joint details from a joint prequalified in D1.1, there's nothing to stop you as long as the PQR is performed to the requirements of your controlling specification.
