Hey fellas,
I was just reviewing AWS B5.5 Specification for the Qualification of Welding Educators and had a question.  Section 7 Knowledge and Performance Requirements, 7.4.  I would have to qualify for all of these processes to get my Educator, even though the welders I train only use GMAW???

You are definately going to need to know more than just GMAW to pass the exam for CWE(Not assuming you don't, but your question makes it sound that way)

Not saying I don't need to know more than GMAW, just wondering if I need to "demonstrate proficiency by performance qualification" in all those processes to earn my CWE. SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW.  3G and 4G plate for each process.  I was made to believe a CWI only needed to qualify in one process to earn his/her CWE.

Are there any CWE's out there that can chime in with their experiences?

Not going to go out and say I know specifically.

But I think you should review the following:

AWS QC5  (can be found at AWS.org in the certification drop down menu under education)
http://files.aws.org/certification/CWE/QC5-91.pdf

Look specifically at clause 6.3

"6.3 The applicant shall have a valid AWS Certified
Welder ID/Certification card or its equal, or shall pass
a valid AWS Certified Welder test, for the welding
process to be taught."

This really doesn't seem to jive with B5.5

The CWE application package itself references AWS QC5 rather than B5.5

THANK YOU!!  The two are contradicting to me.  QC-5  6.3 sounds pretty cut and dry, but so does B5.5 7.4.  "The WE shall demonstrate proficiency in the following welding processes by performance qualification: SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW."

Armed with a CWI, I guess you can become a CWE if qualify with SMAW in the 1F position.
