Are there any special welding/qualification requirements for welding a Section VIII, Div I vessel with an MDMT of -50F?

Thanks. I thought maybe someone would have some info on the AWS boards.

I'm not that familiar with ASME, but there are several who post here who are....I expect they will chime in soon. Seems like a slow day on here today. Guess folks are just too busy to hang out today and chat.

Keep watching your thread, hopefully they will chime in soon.

Perhaps any possible respondants are in shock over the question.
The answer is, maybe.
There is quite a host of requirements for impact testing under ASME Section VIII and the nature of the question indicates you may not have a copy of Section VIII in your possession.
Thats mistake number 1.
You did not tell us what material.
Mistake number 2.
Not recognizing that you did not provide enough information and then utilizing sarcasm was mistake number 3.

The real complication in Section VIII pertains to determining if you have to do impact testring. If you resign yourself to doing so much of this complication goes away.

My first suggestion would be to read Section VIII (get one if you don't have it) and then ask more specific quesitons, since it will be somewhat overshelming at first read. Section VIII is the Queen Mother of all impact testing. It can be intimidating.

I am a bit fuzzy on all of the details but a short answer would be yes.

Normally the code of construction in conjuction with project specifications would indicate requirements for welding on materials with low temp service conditions. One of these requirements for qualification of the welding procedure are impact testing of the welded joint. After the impact value at the given temperature is established, base metals and weld metals selected etc, welding of the PQR could begin.

ASME Sec IX lists variables that must be controlled for welds requiring impact testing as "Supplementary Essential" variables.

I am sure more info will come up. Gotta go.

Len,
My experience has been that ASME is of little help. And for good reason. We are talking interpretation and consulting here, neither of which ASME is anxious or willing to render.
