Up Topic Welding Industry / ASME Codes / Hybrid laser-GMAW welding process

Hi,

We manufacture truck tank semi-trailer in aluminum.  Our tanks are not ASME registered but we are bound by the tank code (DOT-406) to use welding process accepted by the ASME pressure vessel and boilers code.

Is hybrid laser-GMAW welding process accepted by the ASME code?  Could a joint made with that process be considered being a multi-process joint (laser + GMAW)?

thank you,

AB

Hybrid laser-GMAW is not currently addressed by ASME, but there is work underway to develop requirements specifically for hybrid laser-GMAW.  It is on the agenda for the upcoming meeting in November.

Thanks for your answer.  Do you have any idea on the advancement of the requirement development.  When can we expect to have it included in the code.

Thanks again,

AB

It depends on the comments received during the meeting and subsequent letter ballot results.  This item originated in 2009 if that gives you any indication of the pace things move at in the codes and standards world.  Depending on your level of need, you may want to attend the next meeting and participate in the discussion.
