just bought a 400 commander and 3 classic 3 diesel welders all around 98's with somwhere in the range of 12000 to 14000 hrs on em from an iron company paid 3500 for all 4, one of the classics is puking oil out the head gasket and wont start but the other 3 seem to weld and run good even cranked up. so my question is what typically goes wrong with these around this age and what kind of life expectancy? did i get a good deal???? btw had an account along time ago and read the forum daily just cant seem to remember my info, thx in advance

The commanders have had problems with their boards and if one goes out you will not be able to find a replacement.  A shop near me had one for over a month trying to find a new board for it.  I dont know what the owner ended up doing with it.  The classics are great machines.  Definitely a good deal.

Yeah the hours on one of the classic 3's is at 11900 read somwhere that the typical life expectancy is around 12000? seems to be fine though. That commander is a horse though i really wouldnt care if the board took a dump the deutz is solid!

Engine life expectancy depends on maintainance & operating conditions, but if a diesel starts easy , doesn't smoke & has good oil pressure, it will probably go a while longer if You keep up on routine maintainance.

All the machines had routine fleet maintainance and since they were used mainly to hang iron im sure most of those hours were idling. Thanks for the replies.

Got the same feeling it has the lowest hours of the 4 and all were bought at the same time. But then again it has low hours and runs decent and will probably get the same abuse from me :)
