Anyone have a source where I can send my hand held light meter for annual verification/certification/calibration to some NIST standard?

I purchased an Amprobe LM-100 last year to satisfy the requirements of verifying 100fc min to perform MT and PT inspection. When I purchased it, the salesman said it could be calibrated annually, but when I tried to get that done for this year, they said that it can't be verified/calibrated.

have you ever had an auditor ask to prove if a flashlight or light source was producing 100fc??

When I worked at a lab and checked military parts we had to do it, but for our industry I've never been asked.

Honestly, where in the hell is this going to end up.  Industry has gone banana's in my opinion.  Makes one wonder how we ever built some of the engineering marvels of the world before we had calibrated tape measures and lite meters.

You're right Jon...gets crazier everyday. My guys laugh at some of the questions about the calibrations and such and say that we are not building watches here. I just go along and try to apease whomever is checking us out.(within reason)

Chris, no, not an AISC auditor but a TPI..... they asked me to shine it at them so they could see if the batteries were fairly fresh or not....they just didn't measure the beam intensity with anything other than their eyeball. I had to laugh because they winced and squinted at my LED flashlight.

Mike, thanks for the source.

in needs to be checked and recorded at least once......ASME i record it each inspection

John,
I have used Extech for meters and calibrations.   They seem to be OK.  Only thing is that calibration costs about the same as a new meter.  But it's another source to check out.

Something you might want to add to your MT procedures is that if you can see the indication on the NA-16 notch bar, your lighting is considered to be sufficient.  I know it isn't verifying 100fc but many customers/TPIs  have been OK with it.

Thanks for the suggestion Chet. I'll mention things like that to my Level III, especially if it keeps outsiders happy and doesn't cost anything like the calibrations do. Yup, $134 for the cal sticker and I think that was about what we paid for the meter.

134 thats what is pay at essco, you can try LTI in PA i think can do it.

If its good enough for Section XI and the NRC, surely they could not argue using IWA lower case letter cards?

Thanks Gerald...this is good stuff guys, I have several options for my LIII to consider now.

If you are required to perform NDE to an applicable code, the code will dictate how often you must calibrate your lighting equipment.  I am SNT-TC-1A Level II PT & MT therefore our company has in place a written practice for qualification of personnel and a written procedure for MT (per ASME Sec V, Sec VIII Div 1, ASTM E709-08) and for PT (per ASME Sec V, Sec VIII Div 1, ASTM E1417-05) in which calibration of ambient light, light emitting from a flashlight and light emitting from ultraviolet "blacklight" is addressed.
