Is flame straightening permitted by code.  If so what are the parameters.  for carbon steel  X 4200.

Flame straightening is permitted by most codes I know of. But you have to be cognizant of metallurgical transformations. If you violate a transformation temp you have most likely violated your procedure. Plus, with most flame staightening people do not have proper controls in place to determine the temp used. To put it simply, if its red, you screwed up.

I've been in shops where if you didn't get it yellow before you threw water on it you were wasting time.
