Could someone explain what a socet weld is please. Maybe thats one of those welder terms and I know it by another name.

By chance do you mean Socket Weld?
A pipe that fits in the socket of an EL, Cap, Flange, etc and is then Fillet welded.

Here is a web site with a good article on socket joints and a report on various failures associated with socket joints. The section view of the socket joint assembly will be helpful.
