We have a client that needs to qualify a weld o let to a 4" sch. 10 pipe using an  automatic GMAW machine.  This appears to be a partial penetration weld but we can not do tensile and bends.  We can etch and break them.  Any ideas?

If you are doing the O-let for fluids under pressure, you need to be in ASME IX.

Make sure you are actually talking about automatic and not machine welding.

Weldolets are designed as complete joint penetration welds.  They are fit up and tack welded with a root opening of app. 3/32" for an open root weld.

Not sure how AWS B2.1 treats the qualification test for complete joint penetration groove welds, but for ASME IX a groove weld procedure qualification using GMAW on plate or pipe with tensile and bend specimens is required.
