To try and save money you might try finding a donor truck.  Cause your not just gonna need an axle and transfer case.

I wasnt in any way trying to make it sound like you didnt know this.  I just know of guys that have tried to do similar conversions and just try to part it together.  There is always a sensor or two that you dont know about.  Thats why I say try and find a donor vehicle.  Why do you say you need another tranny?  You should be able to find the parts needed to convert your existing tranny.  you might try looking at www.quad4x4.com they have all kinds of parts and can direct you to some they dont have or to people that can help you take on this project.  Also I think it is pirate4x4.com that is an online forum for off road junkies they might be able to help you out as well.  I've been on there quite a few times and they are always helpful just like this place.

If you do go thru with this, I'd bypass the Dodge front axle and go with an older model Ford. I sure do like lockout hubs and packable, greaseable wheel bearings versus unit/hub bearings.

you would probably be money ahead to buy a 4x4 or trade your truck in on a 4x4.

You must be awfuly fond of this truck. I agree I would sell it and find the same model in 4x4. I'm not sure but I can forsee a problem with insurance if you had an accident. Because the vin # is going to always read 2wd. Just a thought.

the only coversion i would do on a modern truck is a straight axle swap. going from 2 wd to 4x4 is a waste of money because you can go buy the same truck right off the lot. you are not paying for anything unique.

I agree with the others, You are going to have too much momey tied up in a bastardised truck with really limited resale value. Not that it can't be done...

I also agree, seems like you could find a 4x4 1 ton around the late 90's model Dodge for around $10k, heck mines and 02' and bluebook is only about $11k. Diesel prices keep on going up and the bluebook will drop like a hammer on these things. On the other hand if your 2x is paid for, title in hand and you have $7k laying around with nothing to do that may be better than a new truck payment but trade in value on your 2x off of the new to you truck is how much difference? If I could get a factory 4x4 for $4k, 5k or even 6k after my trade it would be worth it cause in the long run I'd save $1000 or more.

Good point on the prices dropping Shawn. During the last fuel price panic (2008) I grabbed up an '03 Dodge 3500 4x4 single rear whl., Cummins, crew cab, long box,6 spd., with leather, power everything, 63,000 miles for $16,000. The local Dodge dealer tells me it would still be worth around 19,000 on a trade in now. If it was me I'd cool my jets for a few weeks and start looking for what I want on the internet. Factory is always better than a Mickey Mouse cobbled up mess that you hate and can't get anything out of on trade.
