Hello All,

I am new in welding and welding inspection. I was just curious, under what circumstances will one use API 1104 and when will one use ASME B31.4?I will appreciate the experts in this fourm to educate me. Thanks and I must add I am learning a lot in this forum...just by reading the posts here.

Codes or standards of construction should be determined by the end user and/or their engineering authority.

Hello, yes I am aware the client issue this. I was just curious as to when one code would mostly definately be used as opposed to the other and vice-versa

More often than not my guess would be it depends on who's turf the decision makers are used to working in. Sometimes perhaps there is an engineering assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of each, but I doubt this happens often.

1104 is referenced in B31.4. 1104 is a standard for the construction of cross country pipelines. These can be either liquid or gas.
B31.4 is the code that covers liquid pipelines, B31.8 is the code that covers gas pipelines. The codes 31.4 and 31.8 are referenced by DOT part 192 for Natural Gas Pipelines(B31.8) and DOT part 195 for Liquid Pipelines(B31.4).
1104 has the acceptance criteria for procedure and welder qualification for welders doing pipeline work. Also the visual acceptance and radiograph procedure and acceptance criteria for radiographs taken of the pipeline welds.
If you are welding on a gas pipeline the code will be B31.8 and the construction standard 1104
If you are welding on a liquid pipeline the code will be B31.4 and the construction standard 1104

Just to add a couple of words to dbigk's excellent explanation, B31.4 and 8 cover the design and construction (apart from welding) of liquid and gas pipelines.
Example: you calculate the pipeline thickness following B31.4 and 8. You also take into account the loads that will be imposed to the underground pipelines following B31.4 and 8. You qualify the welders and approve their weldings according to API 1104.

You mean API 1104 Giovanni as opposed to what you "typoed" (1004 ) instead. ;)

Respectfully,
Henry

Typographical error corrected. Thankyou for having pointed it out.

1004 is used for short lines.

I think your referring to Apple PIe 1004, that falls under the Farm Code, 2011
