WOW!  Can you post some pics of the old girl yourself there?  1936.  Might be my only chance to see one.  Has it got a rheostat?  How bout a 115V receptacle?

I'll see if I can get some pics up tomorrow. The front faceplate is stamped metal pieces for the selector. On the side of the engine is the word "Shield Arc" cast into the engine. Also has a pulley on the front which I couldn't figure out what it was for. I was told that back in the day they had no aux power so they would run small generators off a pulley mounted to the front of the welder. I really want a 32 model.

From what I've learned, some of the older machines never even had sheet medal on them, not even hoods.

Some early ones not just Lincoln but Hobart especially had cast iron radiator tanks and sheet metal made by Continental or the engine supplier.  Later ones the welder manufacturer made the sheet metal.

"back in the day" Lincoln sold you the gen set and controls. You coupled the jewel to an engine.

If he's talking about one of these, I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't 3-phase.

This style is a little different, the main arm is at one end and the exciter arm is at the other, both facing out. Adaptation, pto, etc and you have a conversation piece

They are all SAE's aren't they? A bit different than the SA's
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 03-01-2011 01:10
Yes-- like the old SAE350's and SAM650's

We had a bunch of them similar to the one pictured at the auto frame plant, they still got some use [1980's], Being a tool & die maker, I was not allowed to arc weld, air arc or run the line traceer torch, so I never used any of them. I WAS allowed to use a hand torch or track torch, according to the union rules.

the reason i ask is because this guy had one on his service truck rigged up with a hydralic motor from his pto all in a box in the side of his truck. Kinda cool i thawt. Said he removed the electric motor and just replaced it with a hydralic one. Oh! iron head thats not the kind I'm talkin about the one i;m thinkin of stands up on one end and has the cotrols on the bottom. They are awsome tig machines and SMAW machines.

The one You are talking about is an SAE 200-J or  a 250 amp MK-250. They run at 3600 RPM. These have a different control method than an SA-200 which gives continuous voltage and amperage control, rather than the 4 or 5 ranges on an SA-200.

Looks like a sex toy for an elephant...

Here's the pic of the machine

Kaye is correct....as always.
I'm 67, 30 years ago an old timer, now long gone used to tell stories about finding engines that worked well with the Lincoln generator.
There were problems with power at the wrong rpm, overheating etc. Sometimes you would be working in a ditch and the welder would stop. You would go look and find a rod sticking thru the pan or block.
He claimed that the best set up he ever had was built into the back of a jeep and driven by the jeep motor. Sound familiar?
This guy started as a kid mule tender on OK. pipelines when they were welded with gas. I wish now I would have asked more questions.

Hey Shovelhead,
Welcome to the Original AWS Forum.

Not sure if Phaux (original post) still needs your picture.  He posted that in 2011.
