These are helicopters, they go about 120 MPH. It was a "luck shot" for the shooter. They go to a few thousand feet above the ground on takeoff and stay at altitude 'till they are landing to minimize the chances of small arms fire actually hitting the machine. As they start at about 7,000 feet, they are running close to the "celing" particularly in hot weather. They are in safer teritory for take off & landing, but go over hostile teritory in between. The job pays about $650/day, but it is dangerous and living conditions are rough. The military is exposed to more danger, much worse living conditions and get a whole lot less money. Staying home sounds good to Me at this point in life.
