Hi all i need to fix a broken shock asorber mount on my '86 toyota, what i need to know is before i weld on the truck do i need to remove major electrical componets ie. starter, alternator, and battery or can i just weld it and not remove anything. i havent welded on a running vehicle before and i dont want to damage anything.

Thanks,

Levi

Just disconnect the battery.

I just weld. Keep the ground clamp as close as possible to where you will be welding,(of course) and you should be fine.

Be sure the weld circuit doesn't go through any moving parts like bearings, u-joints, tie rod ends, etc.

Just like everbody said. Clean area for ground clamp well and near your work. I always like a nice shiny metal spot. Easier path for current to flow back thru your work clamp than thru the ecm ground. I've welded on gobs of cadillacs with 33 computers/modules on board and never disconnected one. Key is good clean ground near your weld.
