Why does solid mig wire have ER70S-6 and fluxcore wire only has E71T-1. So I guess what i am asking is what does the R mean in ER70S-6 and why doesn't flux core wire have an ER. I know ER is usually used in tig rod classification and that a ER70S-6 is also a tig rod. Just wondering so help a brother out. lol

ER stands for electrode rod, meaning it may be used either way. It may be used as an electrode (gmaw) or it could be used as a rod also (gtaw). Correct me if i'm wrong but this is what I have been taught.

Thats correct as far as I have ever known.

ER70S-6
ER = Electrode Rod
70 = 70,000 min. tensile strength
S = Solid Wire
6 = Chemical Composition

E71T-1
E = Electrode
7 = 70,000 min. tensile strength
1 = All Position wire , 0 = Flat or Horz. only
T = Tubular
1 = Chemical / Operating Charectaristics(1 means it requires some external shielding to protect the puddle while molten)

This info per AWS Welding Inspection Technology Third Edition 1999

Hope this helps,

That is correct. With an "ER" wire you can weld GMAW as a continuous electrode or you can snip off a short length for use as GTAW filler metal. The FCAW electrode designations don't really cross reference well with GMAW/GTAW.

Thank u all that really helped!!!!!!

a little more depth to the S designation includes the amount of Si increases with higher numbers
(increases fluidity and its ability to perform on rust, mill scale etc)
